Never coffee alone

Happy Valentines Day folks, a perfect time to introduce this one. In my blog on 'My Local' I talked about my thoughts on what makes up a good coffee shop. What I failed to mention is my one golden rule.....NEVER COFFEE ALONE

I cant tell you the origins of this rule but I just know it to be true lol.

Nothing depresses me more that having my body screaming out for caffeine but having no one around to share the experience with. That long elevator ride from the office followed by a walk to the local, a stand in line and then the lonely wait for your name to be read out to collect the brew. Then the reverse back to the office with an occasional sip, only to find it empty by the time I sit back down at my desk. What a waste and a soulless injection of the nectar of the gods.

Coffee is a team sport, it is designed to be shared. The experience of coffee is about solving the great challenges of the world, or the day at least, mulling over life's great challenges and concocting bold solutions, some of which we will try, others fade by the time we make it back to the office.

I get that its not always possible or appropriate so I guess its not a hard and fast rule, situational perhaps? I think this is how I view the world through coffee:

  • The fly by - used when you get interrupted and don't get your morning coffee, you almost have the shakes and just need the fix. Here I can justify grabbing one on the way past, as a medical emergency.

  • The home brew - let's face it we all love to just have some quiet time to the sound of your home machine and sit down to enjoy it..... technically alone but quality time with yourself.

  • The sneaky - its just wrong and out of sync but the thought of a coffee sounds great, better finish it before anyone sees.

  • The how do you do - when it's coffee time and you grab someone from work you don't know well to go for a philosophical chat.

  • The world solver 1 - the close work ' first thing in the morning where all the ails of the job melt away.

  • The world solver 2 - the close friend where the ails of life can melt away.

  • The family reconnecter - When it's just time to take 30 minutes with the missus or the kids and just laugh at the world in which you have built.

  • The team play - a coffee run where everyone runs, typically used to break up a meeting under the guise of a coffee break, the meeting usually gets its best input from this break out session.

  • The Family gathering - last but not least is the challenging family gathering where my inner barista comes out with shouts of "white with 2, white with 1, half strength for me"... I pump them out, shove the sugar on the table for anyone who wants to spoil their own, then take great satisfaction in the validation of a coffee well made.

I know you know this but for all the others who don't, its never an instant coffee (do unto others as you would have done to you), never mix work and play so no coffee and your work desk. In fact get out of the office all together and sit outdoors if you can.

Share the coffee love people!!

A Bit About Me

Hey there, Im Gary, I took up coffee late..ish in life, at 30. I was sitting on a red eye flight from Perth to Melbourne, the coffee cart went past and the smell sucked me in. Yep, I was first seduced by Qantas coffee.

I then got back to the home town of coffee drinking, Melbourne, found out what real coffee tastes like and became an instant coffee snob. Now I like sharing it with others, especially those new to coffee or new to Melbourne.

This Blog has the ambition of sharing some of the ride.

Oh and the 'Four' represents my wife and 3 kids :)
